What to do if my deep cycle battery charger gives me the red light ?

was charging fine before today, went out fishing and now got home to re-charger and its giving me the red light .. two possible reasons for the red light according to manuel is either reverse polarities or short circuit ... i put the leads on correctly ( obviously) ...any ideas?
